Little Pine is a picture book aimed at children ages 4 to 8, but meant for anyone. It's about being different. It's about belonging.
Full of rich, stunning pastel illustrations, Little Pine is a first-time collaboration between the author and illustrator, who've known
each other for over 50 years. It is also a first book for both.
ABOUT THE STORY
From winged seed to towering tree, readers witness the growth of this perennial favorite evergreen as it transforms from an unsure young sapling into a strong and confident steward of the forest, learning about friendship and family along the way. Young readers
will delight in figuring out for themselves what Little Pine’s gifts are. Closer contemplation will reveal messages to take to heart.
Praise for Little Pine
"Little Pine is a lovely story for children, with truly wonderful pictures of nature.
Just as a parent marks their child’s growth with lines on a doorframe, as the seasons pass we see
Little Pine grow from a seedling to a strong, tall tree. As he grows, he worries that he doesn’t
have fur like the animals or beautiful color like the flowers. But we see him sheltering his animal friends
and we see birds nesting their young in his branches. He discovers it’s okay to be different, to just
be his wonderful self.
I highly recommend Little Pine, with its beautiful pictures of the animals, trees and flowers
and its sweet story with an important message for children: That it’s okay to be different,
and that by just being themselves they will grow to be a strong, wonderful person."

"When I buy books for my son, I look to see if they are relatable for children with Level 2 autism.
My son was initially struck with the colors of the illustrations, especially the full-page illustration
of Gray Jay, which he carefully traced with his finger...He fully enjoyed the colors of each page...
The colors were very calming, so that he was able to quietly become absorbed in the story...
Little Pine is one of his favorites, and it enjoys a place of honor on his headboard bookcase."
--Kayla R., Asheville, NC
"The message of this darling book is so sweet. Everyone and everything has a special gift, and it comes
naturally. Using the forest as a backdrop, this little pine tree learns of its real purpose. The illustrations
are just as precious as the prose. This is my new go-to baby shower gift! Nature lovers will enjoy the
references in the back, too."
--Kelly V., Centennial, CO
"I am Nana and I love birds. I am so happy to have them included in such a delightful way in this book."
--Marie C., Dennis, MA
"I love gifting Little Pine to family and friends who are expecting. They are sure
to enjoy the story and artwork as much as I do."
--Kim M., Essex Jct., VT
"As a former elementary teacher, I see this book as a treasure trove of cross-curricular activities
for teachers.... As a mother, I see it as a beautiful, uplifing story with a message.... I hope so much that
people will take the time to read and experience this book. It is like a contemplative walk in the woods...
something we all need."
--Karen M., Essex Jct., VT
"Exquisite on so many levels. So peaceful. The prose is beautiful, a perfect marriage with
the illustrations."
--Carol F., M. Ed., retired kindergarten teacher and
literacy specialist, Bristol, RI
"It is such a beautiful book with a beautiful message. I think I have a new favorite children's book."
--Nancy P., early childhood educator, New Haven, CT
"This delightful book is a keeper. Every page has a message that can be discussed for weeks.
I especially like the list of flora and fauna in the back...the book's creators are not strangers
to Mother Nature."
--Lois M., Falling Star Farm, Limington, ME
